Hero Cam

A low camera rising to a subject does two things at once. The low angle makes them large, and the rise makes the audience approach them, so the shot reads as being impressed by somebody.

It is the standard introduction for a character the film wants taken seriously, and it works because the viewer ends up in a position of looking up.

The camera starts below waist height, aimed up, and rises toward the subject while holding the upward angle. The subject fills more of the frame as it comes.

Sky or ceiling behind the subject is what sells the scale. With a wall behind them the low angle has nothing to open onto.

The rise usually stops below their eyeline. Going past it flattens the angle and the effect collapses at the end of the move.

Use it on a character's first appearance, on a stand and fight beat, and on the moment somebody takes charge.

Skip it on a character the audience should worry about. This shot makes people look capable whether they are or not.

A low angle is a fixed position. It makes the subject large from the first frame and holds there. Hero Cam is a low angle plus a rise, and the movement is what makes it an introduction.

The test is whether the camera travels. Still and low is a low angle. Low and closing in is a hero cam.

The model gives a static low angle, because the rise is the part it drops. Say the camera rises toward the subject while continuing to look up.

The second failure is the angle flattening at the end of the move. Say the camera stays below the subject's eyeline throughout.
