Arc Right: The camera curves around the subject toward the right.

What it is for

The camera swings to its right around the subject, and the background runs left behind them. The subject stays the fixed point in a moving world.

A rightward curve tends to read as the scene opening out, in the same way rightward movement generally reads as going forward. It is a small effect and it holds often enough to use.

How it works

A curved path to the camera's right at a steady distance. The subject holds the centre, and everything behind them travels the other way.

The background direction is the instruction that works: it sweeps left in an arc right. Naming that removes the ambiguity that the word right carries on its own.

Hold the radius. A changing distance turns the arc into a spiral and the subject scales through the move, which reads as a mistake.

When to use it

Use it to match rightward movement elsewhere in the scene, and to bring something on the subject's left side into view without moving them.

Leave the direction out when it carries nothing. Getting a clean arc matters more than which way it goes.

Told apart from its neighbours

Dolly Right travels in a straight line, so the subject slides across the frame and out of it. Arc Right curves, so the subject stays centred and only the background moves.

Watch the subject. Sliding across the frame is a dolly. Pinned to the middle while the world turns is an arc.

The prompt

Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.

camera arcs right around <subject>, curved path, subject stays centered, background sweeps left

Run it

What goes wrong

The model gives you a straight dolly and the subject leaves the centre. Say the path is curved and the subject stays centred, and ban straight dolly by name.

The other failure is the wrong direction. Say the background sweeps left, which is what an arc right produces, rather than relying on the word right alone.

Leave out

arc left, straight dolly

Watch for

The background moves opposite the camera. Say which way the background goes to lock the direction.

Questions

An arc right curves the camera around the subject toward the right, holding them centred while the background sweeps to the left.
