Super Dolly In: A very fast travel forward that covers a lot of ground.

What it is for

The camera covers a lot of ground forward and covers it fast. The move is loud on purpose, and the audience is thrown at the subject rather than led to it.

Speed is what separates it from every other approach. A slow push asks a question. This one answers it.

How it works

The same forward travel as a dolly in, run at several times the speed and usually over a longer distance. Real sets get it from a dolly on straight track, a cable rig or a camera car.

The faster the move, the more the foreground matters. At speed, objects near the lens smear past and that smear is most of what sells the distance covered.

Motion blur is part of the look. A fast move on a normal shutter angle blurs the near planes, and the shot reads as flat and video-like without it.

When to use it

Use it for impact, for a reveal that has to land hard, and to open a sequence with force.

Avoid it on dialogue. A move this loud pulls attention onto the camera, and a line spoken under it will not be heard.

Told apart from its neighbours

A dolly in is the same path at a speed a person could walk. A super dolly in is the same path at a speed nobody could walk, and the two carry opposite tones.

Judge it by whether the move draws attention to itself. If the audience notices the camera, you are in a super dolly.

The prompt

Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.

very fast dolly in toward <subject>, camera travels forward at speed, strong parallax through the push

Run it

What goes wrong

Speed makes models reach for a crash zoom, because the picture scales in one motion and nothing has to be rebuilt. Ask for strong parallax through the push, and name a foreground object that has to blur past.

The second failure is a move that arrives and stops dead. Say where the move ends, so the camera lands on a frame rather than slamming into the subject.

Leave out

zoom, slow push

Watch for

Ask for parallax. Without it the model gives you a crash zoom.

Questions

A super dolly in is a very fast forward camera move that covers a long distance. It is a dolly in run at a speed that makes the camera itself part of the moment.
