What it is for

The turn is too fast to follow, so the frame becomes a horizontal smear and the audience loses the room for a beat. Coming out the other side feels like arriving somewhere new.

That makes it a cut disguised as a move. Two whip pans joined at the blur read as one continuous shot, which is how the technique got used to stitch a montage together without a visible edit.

How it works

The camera turns hard on its axis, fast enough that the shutter cannot resolve anything. The blur runs sideways, parallel to the horizon, because the movement is sideways.

It needs a hard stop. The value is in the frame it lands on, so the turn accelerates, smears and then arrests, with a held frame at the end.

Two of them joined in the edit make the hidden cut. The first ends in blur, the second begins in blur, and the join disappears inside the smear.

When to use it

Use it between two things in one space, in comedy timing, and in a montage where each beat should snap to the next.

Do not use it to cover distance or time on its own. A whip pan that lands on nothing is a smear followed by a shrug.

Told apart from its neighbours

Crash Zoom In smears radially, with the blur running out from the centre of the frame. A whip pan smears sideways, with the blur running across it.

Check the direction of the streaks. Across the frame is a whip pan. Out from the middle is a zoom.

Edgar Wright built the montage grammar of Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007) on whip pans, using the smear to join a run of short actions into one continuous piece of comic timing.

What goes wrong

The blur comes back radial, which means the model gave you a zoom. Say the smear runs horizontally across the frame and ban zoom by name.

The other failure is a fast pan with no stop. Name the frame it lands on and say the movement arrests hard, or you get a blur that fades out into nothing.
