Whip Tilt

The vertical turn happens too fast to read, so the frame smears up or down and the audience arrives somewhere else with no warning. It is the vertical version of losing the room for a beat.

Because it runs against the way frames are usually built, it reads as more violent than the sideways equivalent. A whip tilt feels like being dropped or thrown rather than swung.

The camera pivots vertically at speed, and the streaks run top to bottom. The direction of the smear is the only reliable way to tell it from its cousin.

It stops hard. The move exists to deliver a second frame, so the deceleration is part of the shot and the landing frame holds.

Two of them cut together at the blur hide the join, the same way a pair of whip pans do, which is the usual reason to shoot one at all.

Use it between two things stacked vertically, on an impact, and in a montage where the beats should hit rather than flow.

Skip it when the audience needs orientation. Nothing about the geography survives the smear.

Whip Pan smears sideways because the camera turned sideways. Whip Tilt smears up and down because the camera turned vertically.

The streaks settle it. Read the direction of the blur and you have the name of the shot.

The blur runs sideways, which means the model reached for the more common move. Say the smear is vertical and ban whip pan by name.

The other failure is a fast tilt that eases out instead of stopping. Ask for a hard stop and name the frame it lands on.
