What it is for
The scene turns in depth rather than in the plane of the frame, so near edges swing wide and far edges barely shift. The audience reads solid objects sitting in real space.
It is the difference between a photograph being spun and a world being walked around. The rate at which different depths move is the entire signal.
How it works
The viewpoint moves around the subject on a path that has depth in it, so parts of the scene at different distances travel at different rates across the frame.
Something close to the lens is required. Near objects are what swing fastest, so without one there is nothing to contrast against the slow background and the turn flattens out.
Occlusion sells it further. If a near object passes in front of a far one and hides it, the shot proves depth in a way that speed differences alone cannot.
When to use it
Use it to establish that a space is real, on a reveal where something is hidden behind something else, and in product or architectural work where form has to read.
Avoid it when the scene is genuinely flat, such as a wall, a screen or a sky. The move has nothing to work with and looks like a warp.
Told apart from its neighbours
A lazy susan turns the subject in front of a fixed camera, and the background is frozen. A 3D rotation moves the viewpoint through the space, so the background changes and near objects shear against far ones.
Watch two objects at different distances. If they move at the same rate, the image is being spun. If they separate, the scene is being rotated in depth.

What goes wrong
The result reads as a flat image turning, because the model had no foreground to work with. Put something close to the lens and name it.
The second failure is a rotation with no occlusion. Ask for a near object to pass in front of a far one during the move, which forces the depth to be real.
