How do I create the mask?

The mask is a black and white image the same size as your photo. White marks the area to repaint. Black marks everything to keep. Any image editor can make one, including the free browser-based ones, or you can upload a source photo whose alpha channel already carries the cut-out. Visual Sandbox does not have a brush tool in the composer yet, so today the mask arrives as a file. Outpainting needs no mask at all.

What should the prompt say for the area I masked?

Describe what should be in that area, not the edit you want performed. Write 'a blue knit sweater', not 'change the shirt'. The model also reads the shape of the mask as a hint, so a hat-shaped mask over a head tends to produce a hat whatever the prompt says. Mask a little wider than the object so the model has room to blend the edges. One specific noun phrase beats a long instruction.

How do I remove an object from a photo?

Mask the object and describe the background that should sit behind it. Prompts like 'remove the object', or an empty prompt, work poorly, because the model reads them as an instruction to paint something rather than nothing. Write 'grass and open sky' or 'plain white studio wall' and it fills the gap with that. Include the object's shadow and reflection inside the mask. A shadow left outside the mask gives the model a reason to invent a new object to explain it.

Can FLUX Fill Pro extend a photo beyond its original edges?

Yes. Pick an outpaint preset and the model paints new image outside the original frame. Zoom out 1.5x or 2x for room on every side. Make square turns a portrait or landscape shot into 1:1. Or extend one side only, left, right, top, or bottom. The original pixels carry through untouched and only the new area is generated, so a 1:1 product shot becomes a 9:16 frame for reels without re-rendering the product. Outpainting ignores the mask, so you do not need to supply one.

What do the steps and guidance settings change?

Steps control how much detail the model resolves, from 15 to 50. Higher values take longer and sharpen fine texture. Guidance controls how literally the model follows your prompt. High guidance pushes hard toward the words and can leave a visible edge where the new area meets the old. Lower guidance lets the fill settle into the surrounding light and grain, which is usually what retouching and object removal want. If an edit comes back fuzzy or hard-edged, lower the guidance first.

What size is the output image?

The output matches the size of the photo you upload. There is no aspect ratio picker, because the whole point of the model is to hand your image back with one region changed. Outpainting is the exception. The preset you choose adds new area, so a zoom out or a make square run returns a larger image or a new shape. You can save as PNG or JPG. PNG is the default here, since an edit is often the input to the next edit and repeated JPG saves soften detail.
