The lens runs in and out over and over with no rest. The frame never settles, so the audience cannot find a stable place to look.

It reads as a nervous system rather than a camera. Anxiety, a drug sequence, a panic attack, a meme edit. The move is doing an internal state out loud.

Repetition removes the meaning a single zoom would have. One zoom in points at something, and six in a row point at nothing, which is the effect.

Each pass runs the lens in and straight back out without a hold at either end. The turn at the top of a pass is what makes it a yoyo, since any pause breaks it into separate zooms.

Count the passes and give a rhythm. Three fast passes in a two second clip is a different shot from one slow pass each way.

It stacks badly with camera travel. Keep the body still, or the repetition gets lost inside the movement.

A rhythm helps it read as designed. Passes tied to a beat feel like an edit choice, and passes at random feel like a broken lens.

Use it for altered states, for comic panic, and for short social clips where the edit is meant to be felt.

Keep it away from anything that has to be read. Text, faces in conversation and product detail all fall apart under a frame that never stops.

Keep it short. Two or three seconds is usually the whole shot, because the effect has no development in it and repetition past that point stops registering.

It also suits a loop. Because the frame returns to where it started, the clip can run end to end without a visible seam, which is why it survives on social platforms.

A crash zoom in is a single snap that lands and holds. A yoyo zoom never lands, because the lens turns around and goes back the moment it arrives.

One pass with a hold is a crash zoom. Two or more passes with no hold is a yoyo.

Models do one pass and stop. Say how many passes and say there is no rest between them.

The second failure is a gentle version that looks like breathing. Give the speed of a pass as well as the count, or the effect softens into a drift.

A third problem is a gentle amplitude that looks like breathing. Give the range of the zoom as well as the count, such as from a medium to a close-up and back.
