Crane Over

Something blocks the view, the camera rises over its edge, and what was hidden is suddenly there. The obstacle is what makes the reveal, because the audience knows the camera had to get past it.

It also proves the geography. Going over a wall rather than cutting past it tells the audience that the two sides are genuinely next to each other.

The camera climbs on an arm until it clears the top edge of the obstruction, then usually tilts down onto what lies beyond. The reveal happens at the moment the edge drops out of the bottom of frame.

The obstacle has to be established first. A few seconds of hedge, wall, roofline or crowd at the start of the shot is what makes the clearing of it mean anything.

Keep the edge in frame through the rise. If the obstruction leaves early, the reveal has already happened and the rest of the move is spare.

Use it to reveal what is behind a barrier, to enter a space from outside it, and to show that two places are adjacent.

Skip it when nothing is hidden. A crane over open ground is a crane up with extra words attached.

Crane Up opens out onto more of the same scene. Crane Over clears a specific obstacle and reveals something that was concealed by it.

The test is whether the frame contains a barrier at the start. No barrier means the shot is a plain crane up, whatever it was called.

The model rises and reveals nothing, because it did not know what was in the way. Name the obstacle, say the camera clears its top edge, and name what is behind it.

The second failure is a cut hidden in the move. Say it is one continuous shot with no cut, or a model may deliver two frames joined together.
