Push In: The camera advances and the frame closes on the subject.

What it is for

A push in narrows the world one frame at a time. Nothing in the scene has to change, and the audience still feels the walls coming in, because the frame keeps taking things away.

It works on a held moment rather than on an action. A person sits with news they have just been given, the camera creeps forward, and the shot says the thought is getting louder.

How it works

The camera advances along the lens axis toward the subject. The move is slow enough that a viewer cannot name the moment it started, which usually means a short distance spread across the whole take.

The end frame is the decision. A push that lands on a medium close-up says something different from one that lands on a choker, so pick the finish before you pick the start.

Keep the speed flat. A push that eases near the end draws attention to the camera, which is the opposite of what the move is for.

When to use it

Use it on realisation, on dread, and on a line where the meaning lands after the words do. It is the standard move under a monologue that turns.

Do not use it on action. A push into a fight competes with the fight, and the move disappears under it.

Told apart from its neighbours

A dolly in is the same physical move named after the equipment. A push in is the same move named after its effect, and the name carries the expectation that it is slow.

That difference is practical. Ask for a dolly in and a model gives you travel at any speed. Ask for a slow push in and the speed is part of the request.

The prompt

Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.

slow push in on <subject>, steady advance, frame closing, pressure building

What goes wrong

A fast approach is the usual failure, and it turns the shot into a crash zoom with a quieter label. Say slow, and give the move a duration, such as a steady advance that runs the length of the shot.

The other failure is a subject who performs the moment while the camera moves. Ask for the subject to stay still. The camera does the work.

Leave out

pull out, zoom

Watch for

Slow is the point. A fast push is a different shot entirely.

Questions

A push in is a slow forward camera move that closes the frame on a subject. The scene stays the same and the framing tightens, so the moment feels like it is being pressed.
