Shadow Box: A figure is framed inside a lit opening against darkness.

What it is for

A figure stands inside a bright opening with darkness all around it. The frame becomes a box with one lit hole in it, and the person reads as a shape rather than a face.

It puts somebody between two worlds. They are inside the dark and framed by the light, or the other way round, and the composition says which side they belong to before they move.

How it works

The opening is the only lit area. A doorway, a window, a mouth of a cave, exposed so the interior of the opening reads and everything surrounding it falls to full black.

Exposing for the bright opening is what makes the surround go black. The gap is usually four or five stops, which is why the figure loses its facial detail and keeps only its outline.

The shape of the opening does the composing. A rectangle reads as architecture and control. An irregular one reads as a way out of somewhere.

When to use it

Use it for arrival and departure, for a threshold somebody has to cross, and for the end of a scene where a character is left outside.

Skip it when the face has to carry the moment. At this contrast the expression is gone.

Told apart from its neighbours

A silhouette is a dark subject against a bright background, and the background can be anything: a sky, a wall, a window. A shadow box needs the frame around the opening to be black as well, so the lit area is a contained shape inside darkness.

The test is what surrounds the bright area. Bright to the edges of frame is a silhouette. Black to the edges of frame with one lit opening is a shadow box.

On film

John Ford closes The Searchers (1956) on a dark interior with the doorway as the only lit part of the frame, and the figure standing in it reads as an outline against the desert beyond.

The prompt

Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.

<subject> silhouetted inside a bright opening, surrounding frame in complete darkness, figure reading as a shape in a lit box

Run it

What goes wrong

The surround comes back as dark grey with detail in it, which softens the box. Say the frame outside the opening is completely black, as the note asks.

The second failure is a lit face inside the opening. Ask for the figure to read as a silhouette or near silhouette against the bright opening.

Leave out

even light, open frame

Watch for

Keep the surround fully black. Any detail outside softens the box.

Questions

A shadow box frames a figure inside a bright opening with the rest of the frame in complete darkness, so the lit area reads as a box containing a shape.
