What it is for
The surface goes transparent and the structure underneath appears. It is the one view in this group that shows the inside of a thing rather than a property of its outside.
It carries authority, because the audience associates it with medicine and with security. Whatever the image shows is taken as fact rather than as an opinion about the subject.
How it works
X rays pass through matter and are absorbed on the way. Dense material such as bone or metal absorbs the most, so less radiation reaches the detector behind it.
That means the raw record is an inverse: the densest parts receive the least exposure. Printed as a positive, the convention people recognise, bone reads bright and soft tissue reads dark.
There is no focus and no perspective in the ordinary sense. The image is a shadow cast at one to one, so it has no depth of field, no bokeh and no vanishing point.
When to use it
Use it for a medical beat, a security scanner, a reveal of something hidden inside an object, and title sequences that want an analytical feel.
Skip it when texture or colour matters. An x ray throws away everything about a surface, which is most of what makes an object look like itself.
Told apart from its neighbours
Thermal maps how hot a surface is and tells you nothing about what is behind it. A person and a warm wall read the same way if they are at the same temperature.
An x ray looks straight through the surface to the structure. The test is whether you can see inside. Thermal stops at the skin, and an x ray does not.

What goes wrong
The result keeps normal brightness relationships, so bone comes back dark. Invert the expectation and say it plainly: dense material reads bright and soft material reads dark.
The second failure is an x ray with lighting in it, complete with highlights and shadows. There is no light source, so ask for a flat monochrome image with no shading and no specular highlight.
