Cameo Lighting

One lit figure, and behind them nothing at all. The background receives no light, so it stops being a place and the subject has nowhere to be.

Theatre uses the same move, and the frame borrows the association. A person lit this way looks addressed rather than observed.

Light the subject and keep every source off the background. Distance does most of the work: move the subject far enough forward that the falloff between them and the wall is several stops, and the wall records as black.

Negative fill on the sides keeps spill from finding anything. Black cloth, a flag, or simply an empty studio depth behind the subject all get there.

A rim or a hair light is optional and changes the reading. With one, the figure has an edge and sits in space. Without one, the lit side ends and the picture ends with it.

Use it for a monologue, a portrait, a testimonial, or any moment that should exist outside a location. It also solves a bad background, since the background stops existing.

Avoid it when the place matters. Cameo lighting throws away every piece of context the set was built to give.

A spotlight describes the source: a tight beam with a hard edge, which often lands on a floor or a wall as a visible pool. Cameo lighting describes the result, which is a lit subject with a black surround.

The two overlap and are not the same. A spotlight in a lit room is still a spotlight. Cameo needs the surround gone.

Spill reaches the background and the shot becomes ordinary low key. Say the background receives no light at all, and ban ambient fill.

The other result is a cut-out look, where the subject sits on black with a hard artificial edge. Ask for natural falloff at the shoulders so the figure ends in shadow rather than at a line.
