Race Track

A figure above a circuit with cars moving on it. The subject holds still and the track does not, and that contrast is the frame.

The setting carries the speed, so the person in it has nothing to do. That makes it useful for a portrait that needs energy behind it.

Put the camera above the track, on a grandstand, a bridge or a viewing platform, with the straight running through the lower part of the frame.

The cars have to smear while the person stays sharp. In practice that means cars moving fast enough to blur across the frame during a normal exposure, with the subject holding position.

Low warm sun across the tarmac gives the surface texture and throws long shadows from the grandstands into the frame.

Use it for a motorsport piece, a sponsor frame, or a portrait that wants an industry standing behind it.

Skip it if the track has to be empty. Without cars the shot is a picture of some architecture.

Road Rush puts the camera inches off the road and races it along the surface. It is a low travelling shot with nobody standing in it.

Camera height settles it. Down at the tarmac at speed is Road Rush. Above the circuit looking down with a person in frame is Race Track.

The circuit comes back empty, because a model asked for a race track gives you the track. Say cars streaking along the straight below.

The second failure is a tight crop on the person, which loses the circuit. Ask for the grandstands and the straight to stay in frame.
