What it is for
A person becomes stone. The pose holds, the fabric stops moving, and what was flesh now has the weight and the coldness of something quarried.
Sculpture carries authority the original subject may not have earned. Anything carved in white marble reads as classical, permanent and slightly removed from the present.
How it works
Marble is translucent for a few millimetres. Light enters the surface, scatters and comes back out, which is why carved stone looks soft at the edges of a lit form while staying hard to the touch.
The veining is a mineral record running through the block. Grey and faintly warm, irregular, and continuing across the form rather than following it. Veins that trace the anatomy give the effect away.
Drapery is the sculptor's problem and the thing that shows the craft. Deep folds catch shadow and the ridges between them take a polish, so the fabric is where the material reads most clearly.
When to use it
Use it for a held pose, a statue reveal, or a shot about somebody being memorialised. It suits stillness and directional light.
Skip it when the subject has to move naturally. Stone that walks reads as animation rather than sculpture, and the stillness is most of the effect.
Told apart from its neighbours
3D Render is a way of making an image, with clean ray traced light and surfaces that are slightly too perfect. It can render anything, including marble.
The check is what the surface is made of. Grey veining running through translucent stone means Marble. Precise reflections and flawless geometry with no material story mean 3D Render.
The prompt
Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.
<subject> carved as white marble, polished stone surfaces, faint grey veining, sculpted drapery, stone catching directional light
What goes wrong
Plain white with no veining comes back, and it reads as plaster or as a clay model. Ask for faint grey veining by name, and say the veins run through the form rather than around it.
The other failure is skin tone surviving in the shadows, so the figure looks painted white. Ban skin tone and fabric texture, and ask for polished stone catching a directional light.
Leave out
skin tone, fabric texture
Watch for
Ask for veining. Plain white reads as plaster rather than marble.
