The scene is not the whole frame. It sits inside a page, with a border and an edge around it, so the audience is looking at a record of the event rather than the event.

Age does the rest. Foxed parchment and worn gold say this was written down a long time ago by somebody who was there, which is a claim no amount of painting inside the frame can make on its own.

An illuminated manuscript is a handwritten page with painted decoration and gold applied to it. The picture sits in a reserved area, and the border carries pattern, vines or small figures.

Gold leaf is metal, so it behaves differently from paint. It sits slightly proud of the surface, catches light as a hard glint, and cracks along the folds where the page has moved.

Parchment ages unevenly. Foxing is the brown spotting that spreads across old paper, the edges darken and soften, and the corners round off from handling.

Use it for a prologue, a legend, or anything the story treats as history. It suits a held frame where the reader has time to look at the border.

Skip it for present tense action. The page puts distance between the audience and the event, which is the wrong move when the event is happening now.

Agamemnon is a painted scene that fills the frame. There is no page and no border, and the paint is realist oil rather than manuscript illumination.

The check is whether an edge exists. A border with parchment outside it means Knight's Diary. Paint running to all four sides of the frame means Agamemnon.

A crisp, even border comes back and reads as a template, which is the trap the entry warns about. Ask for foxed parchment, darkened edges and cracks in the gold.

The other failure is a modern illustration dropped inside a medieval frame. Say the scene itself is painted in the manuscript style, with flat colour and no photographic depth.
