An empty room with money in it. Bare surfaces, one colour that matters, and large windows doing all the lighting.

The restraint is the message. A room with nothing in it says somebody could afford to leave it that way, which is why the look attaches to interiors, technology and anything sold as calm.

Large windows, or one wide soft source, throwing long soft shadows across a plain floor. Contrast stays low and the falloff is gentle.

The palette runs to two or three values of one neutral, with a single accent allowed to be saturated. Materials carry the interest: concrete, pale wood, plaster, matte metal.

Lines stay straight and mostly horizontal or vertical. A level camera at chest height suits it, because a tilt adds energy the look does not want.

Use it for interiors, furniture, skincare, technology, and any piece where calm is the pitch.

Avoid it where warmth or history matters. The look has no room for wear, clutter or anything handmade.

Negative Space is a rule about composition. The subject holds one corner and emptiness takes the rest of the frame. Modern is a set of materials and a palette, and it can fill the frame edge to edge.

Ask what the empty part is made of. A blank field placing a small subject is negative space. A described room with bare surfaces is Modern.

Objects accumulate. Asked for a minimal interior, a model still adds a vase, a lamp, a rug and a stack of books. Name the few things in the room and say every other surface is bare.

The second failure is ornament. Ask for flat planes and plain materials, and rule out moulding, pattern and carved detail by name.
