What it is for
One warm face in a frozen world. The temperature split does the storytelling, because the only living thing in the frame is the only warm thing in it.
It works at a glance. Colour temperature is something the eye reads before it reads shape, so the contrast lands before the audience has understood the scene.
How it works
Colour temperature is measured in kelvin. Low numbers are warm and orange, high numbers are cold and blue, and a wide gap between the key on the face and the ambient light is the whole technique.
The background loses saturation as well as warmth. Snow, overcast sky and frozen ground all drain toward white and pale blue, which leaves the face as the only saturated area in frame.
The warm source should be motivated if you can manage it. A fire, a window, a torch. A warm key with no cause reads as a grade rather than as a condition of the scene.
When to use it
Use it for survival, isolation and endurance. Anything where a person is the only source of heat in a wide cold place.
Skip it in a warm environment. Matching the background temperature to the face removes the contrast and leaves an ordinary portrait.
Told apart from its neighbours
Thermal is a camera that maps temperature to colour across the whole frame. It replaces the image with a heat map, and nothing in it looks photographic.
The check is whether the picture is still a photograph. A warm face in a cold real scene means Cold Vision. A false colour heat map with no visible light in it means Thermal.
The prompt
Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.
<subject> lit warm against a frozen white landscape, heat on the face, everything else cold and drained, strong temperature split
What goes wrong
The model matches the background to the face and the split disappears, which is the trap the entry warns about. Ban a warm background and a matched temperature, and name both temperatures.
The other failure is a background that stays saturated. Say the surroundings are cold and drained, so the face is the only place colour survives.
Leave out
matched temperature, warm background
Watch for
Split the temperature hard. A warm background removes the contrast.
