Paper

Layers of torn paper sit between the audience and the picture. Some of the image shows through the gaps and the rest is covered, so the frame reads as something assembled by hand.

The tears carry the energy. A ragged white edge across a face is an interruption, and interruptions are what make a collage feel made rather than designed.

Paper tears along its fibres, so the edge is uneven and shows a pale fuzzy core where the layers separate. That white fringe is the tell, and it is what a cut edge does not have.

Several layers at slightly different depths give the frame somewhere to cast small shadows. Without those shadows the paper reads as a flat graphic laid over the shot.

Cut-out sections work as windows. The picture continues underneath, so the paper is covering an image rather than replacing it.

Use it for titles, for a zine or punk register, and for a montage that should feel handmade and quick.

Skip it when the image has to be read whole. The paper is there to hide parts of it, and anything important behind a torn layer is gone.

Origami is folded and three dimensional. The world itself is rebuilt from paper, with creases and flat planes meeting at angles. Nothing is torn.

The check is what the paper is doing. Torn layers lying over the picture mean Paper. Folded planes making up the subject mean Origami.

The edges come back clean and straight, which reads as a template. Say the edges are ragged and torn, with a pale fibrous fringe, and ban clean or smooth edges.

The other failure is paper with no depth. Ask for several layers at different depths with small shadows between them, so the collage sits in front of the picture rather than on it.
