Fallen Angel

Wings, and a city a long way below. The height is what makes the wings believable, because the viewer accepts them once the figure is standing somewhere nobody could stand.

Light from underneath is the other half. A face lit by a city rather than by the sky reads as somewhere it should not be.

Put the subject above the skyline with lights spread out below, on a roof edge, a ledge or nothing at all. The horizon sits low in the frame or leaves it entirely.

The wings are dark and large enough to break the edges of frame. Feather detail catches a rim from behind while the inner surfaces stay in shadow.

The key comes from below and runs cold. Street light, windows and signage give a scattered uneven source that looks nothing like a studio key.

Use it for a night piece, a title frame, or a character who has to read as apart from the city they are over.

Skip it in daylight and skip it at ground level. Both remove the reason the wings work.

Epiphany is a lighting beat. Light rises on a face at the moment somebody understands something, and it has nothing to do with height or with wings.

Read where the light comes from and what it is doing. A face lit from a city far below, with wings against the skyline, is Fallen Angel.

The model brings the figure down to the street, where the wings look like a costume. Say standing high above the city with the lights below them.

The second failure is a top light or a clean key. Ask for cold light coming up from the city itself.
