Pearl Earring

A face comes out of the dark with one source on it. Nothing else in the frame competes, so the whole picture is a person looking back at you.

The turn is part of it. The subject is caught mid movement toward the viewer, which gives a still portrait the feeling of an interrupted moment.

The ground behind is dark and empty. No furniture, no pattern, no readable depth. That emptiness is what makes the face read as lit rather than photographed in a room.

One soft source sits to the side, roughly at head height, the size and quality of a north window. It wraps the near cheek and lets the far side fall away without going fully black.

Johannes Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring around 1665 and gave the name to this arrangement. The single specular highlight, on an earring or an eye or a wet lip, is the detail the whole frame hangs on.

Use it on a single portrait where you want stillness and attention. It suits a held frame with almost no camera movement.

Skip it when the location matters. The look deletes the background on purpose, so a shot that has to say where somebody is will fight it.

Rembrandt Lighting is one pattern on the face: a small triangle of light on the cheek away from the key, made by the key sitting at about forty five degrees and above. It describes the shadow shape and nothing else.

This look describes the whole picture. Dark empty ground, soft side window, one bright highlight, the turn toward the viewer. You can light a Pearl Earring frame without ever forming the Rembrandt triangle.

Detail creeps into the background and the old master read disappears. Say the background is plain and dark, and ban a bright background by name.

The other failure is even light on the face. Ask for one soft source from the side and a single bright highlight, so the far side of the face still has somewhere to fall.
