Triangular Composition

Three points in the frame make a shape, and a triangle is the most stable shape there is. The composition stops floating and starts holding itself together.

The apex decides the hierarchy. Whatever sits at the top point reads as dominant, and the two at the base read as supporting it, so a group gains a structure without anybody saying who is in charge.

Name all three points. Two make a line and hold nothing, and three make the shape. They can be people, objects, or a mix of both.

Vary the distance from the lens. A triangle across a flat plane reads as a row, and a triangle with one point closer to the camera reads as a solid arrangement with depth.

The orientation changes the feel. Apex up is stable and formal. Apex down is unstable and reads as an arrangement about to collapse.

Use it for three characters, for a group portrait, and for any static frame that has to look composed rather than caught.

Skip it in a moving scene. The triangle only holds while everyone stays put, so a walking group breaks the shape within a second.

A three-shot is a framing that holds three people. Triangular composition is an arrangement, and it can be built from one person and two objects, or from three objects with nobody in frame.

Central framing points everything at the middle. A triangle distributes the frame across three places and keeps all of them active.

The model lines the three elements up flat across the frame, facing the lens like a team photograph. Say one point sits closer to the camera and name who is at the apex.

The second failure is three elements with nothing linking them. State that the three together form a triangle and say which corner each one holds.
