Central Framing

Everything in the picture points at one place, so the eye has no choice about where to go. Lines, edges and shapes all run inward and meet at the middle.

It is a stronger instruction than simply putting the subject in the centre. Every line in the picture does the pointing, so the audience arrives at the subject by being led there.

Find or build lines that converge: a corridor, a table running away from the lens, a crowd opening a gap, light falling in a wedge. Those lines do the work and the subject sits where they meet.

The convergence has to be near the middle of the frame. Lines meeting off to one side still lead the eye, and that is leading lines rather than central framing.

A wider lens strengthens it, because a wide lens exaggerates how fast lines run away from the camera. The same corridor on an 85mm converges gently and points at nothing in particular.

Use it on a reveal, on an arrival, and on the shot that has to say this person is the point of the scene.

It has nothing to work with in an open space. Nothing converges in a field, so the request collapses into an ordinary centred subject.

Centred composition places the subject in the middle and stops there. Central framing adds the pointing. If you remove the lines and the shot still works, it was centred composition.

One point perspective is the strict version, where every parallel line meets at a single vanishing point. Central framing is looser and accepts shapes and light as well as architecture.

The model returns a centred subject with a flat background, because centring is the easy half of the request. Name what does the pointing and the frame gains its structure.

The second failure is convergence that misses. Say the lines meet on the subject rather than somewhere in the frame.
