Void

A large emptiness sits in the frame and the audience reads it as a presence. A black doorway, a dark sea, a white fog, a hole in the ground.

It works because a void hides things. The eye keeps checking it, which is how an empty area generates tension without anything ever coming out of it.

Give the void a hard edge. It needs something to read against, so a doorway needs a lit wall around it and a dark sea needs a horizon or a shoreline.

Keep it genuinely featureless inside. Any detail in the void turns it into a place, and a place is not frightening in the same way.

Size decides the register. A void taking a third of the frame reads as a threat nearby, and one taking most of the frame reads as the subject's whole situation.

Use it in horror, in grief, and in any scene where what is missing matters more than what is there.

Skip it when the shot has to be readable at small sizes. A large dark area can compress to a flat black block on a phone, and the edge that made it work disappears.

Negative space isolates the subject and stays neutral. A void carries a charge and often becomes a second subject in the frame.

Low key lighting is a lighting scheme across a whole scene. A void is a compositional element inside one frame, and a low key scene may contain no void at all.

The model fills the void with faint detail, because featureless areas look like errors to it. Say the area is completely empty and give it a hard edge against something lit.

The second failure is a void that reads as underexposure. Name what surrounds it and keep that part correctly exposed, so the darkness looks deliberate.
