Architexture

A building is shot so close and so flat that it stops being a place and becomes a surface. Windows turn into a grid and balconies turn into stripes.

The effect removes scale. With no sky, no ground and no doorway, the audience has nothing to measure against, so the frame reads as pattern first and as architecture second.

Fill the frame with the facade and let nothing else in. Any sky turns the pattern back into a building, and so does a strip of pavement at the bottom.

Square the camera to the wall. A facade shot at an angle keeps its perspective, and perspective is exactly what tells the eye this is a structure standing in space.

A long lens helps. From further back with a longer lens the facade flattens further, and the repeating elements sit at the same apparent size across the whole frame.

Use it for a title card, a transition, or a frame that has to say city without saying which city. A person placed against it reads as very small without any wide shot.

Skip it when the audience needs to know where they are. A flattened facade is deliberately anonymous, so it cannot establish a location.

One point perspective keeps the depth and runs it to a point. Architexture removes the depth on purpose. The test is whether lines converge: if they do, it is perspective.

Repetition is the general case of one element repeating. Architexture is repetition where the element is built form and the frame is filled with it.

The model includes the sky or the roofline, which restores the sense of a building standing up. Say the facade fills the frame edge to edge with no sky and no ground.

The second failure is a three-quarter view with strong perspective. Say the camera is square to the wall and the surface reads flat.
