Frame within Frame

Something in the scene makes a second border around the subject, so the shot has two frames and the inner one belongs to the world.

The enclosure carries meaning on its own. A subject inside a doorway is contained, watched or shut out, and none of that has to be said in the dialogue.

Find the opening and put the camera so the subject sits inside it. A doorway, a window, an arch, a mirror, a gap between two people.

Name the opening, because each one encloses differently. A doorway separates rooms, a mirror doubles the subject, and an arch makes the subject look ceremonial.

Keep the inner frame darker than what it holds. A bright interior seen through a dark doorway reads instantly, and the same shot with both at the same brightness loses the border.

Use it when a character is trapped, excluded, observed, or standing on a threshold between two states.

Avoid it when a scene should feel open. The enclosure reads as constraint every time, so it fights a moment of release.

A dirty frame puts something soft at one edge of the picture. A frame within a frame surrounds the subject on at least two sides and is usually sharp enough to read as architecture.

Windows are the specific case where the second frame is glazed, which adds a reflection and a barrier that a doorway does not have.

John Ford opens and closes The Searchers (1956) on a doorway. The camera sits inside a dark interior and the desert is a bright rectangle beyond it, with Ethan framed in that rectangle, outside the house at the end just as he was at the start.

The model returns the subject standing near a doorway rather than inside it. Say the subject is framed within the opening, with the opening visible on both sides.

The second failure is an inner frame with no contrast, so it disappears. Say the opening is dark and the space beyond it is lit.
