Figure-Ground

The subject has to separate from what is behind it or the eye cannot find it. Figure and ground is the most basic job a composition does, and everything else assumes it has been done.

It matters more at small sizes. A shot that reads on a large screen can lose its subject entirely on a phone, where the difference between a dark coat and a dark wall disappears.

Separate by tone first. Put a light subject on a dark ground or a dark subject on a light one, and the shape reads at any size.

Colour and texture are the next levers. A warm subject against a cool background separates even at similar brightness, and a smooth subject reads against a broken texture.

Focus alone is not enough. A busy background blurs into a bright mess that still competes, so soften it and darken it, or move the camera so the subject sits against something plainer.

Check it on every frame with a subject in it, and fix it first when a shot feels unclear for no obvious reason.

Break it on purpose when a character should be hard to find: camouflage, a crowd, somebody hiding. That is a deliberate figure and ground failure and it has to be stated or it looks like an error.

A silhouette is the extreme case, where the figure is reduced to a black shape on a bright ground and loses all its interior detail. Figure and ground usually keeps the subject fully visible.

Visual weight ranks everything in a frame. Figure and ground only asks whether the subject separates from the background behind it.

The model matches the subject to the background, especially in dark scenes where a coat, a wall and a shadow all land on the same tone. Say the subject reads against the background and name the difference in tone or colour.

The second failure is separation by blur alone. Ask for a darker or plainer background as well, because a blurred bright background still pulls the eye.
