Three-Shot

Three people in one frame stop being a line and become a shape. Who stands with whom is visible before anyone speaks.

The odd number does the work. Two people balance, three people take sides, and the composition makes the alliance obvious without a line of dialogue.

All three are readable, usually at medium or wider. The arrangement is the decision: a row, a triangle with one person forward, or two together and one apart.

Depth is the usual solution to a flat row. Put one person closer to the lens and the frame gains a foreground, a middle and a background, which also tells the audience who to watch first.

Use it when a scene has a third party whose reaction matters, and when the geometry of a group is about to change.

Drop to a two-shot or singles when one exchange takes over. Holding a third person in frame while two people talk asks the audience to keep watching somebody with nothing to do.

A two-shot is a pair, and the meaning lives in the gap. A three-shot has an arrangement, and the meaning lives in the grouping.

A group shot starts around four people and treats them as one unit instead of three individuals.

Models line all three up flat, facing the lens like a team photo. Say who stands where, and put one of them closer to the camera.

The other failure is a face turned away or cropped at the edge of frame. State that all three faces stay visible.
