Group Shot

Four or more people read as one body. A crowd, a family, a jury, a team, and the frame treats them as a single thing the scene can act on.

It also sets the odds. One person facing a group is a different scene from one person facing one person, and the group shot is what makes that count visible.

Wide enough to hold everyone, staged in depth so the back row is not a wall of half heads. Rows at different heights, or a table that curves toward the lens, keep faces separated.

Lens length controls how crowded the group feels. A long lens stacks the rows and packs the frame. A wider lens opens the gaps and gives everyone air.

Use it for any scene where the collective is a character, and use it to show a shift in a room, such as the moment most people move to one side of an argument.

Cut away from it for anything specific. A group shot cannot carry a line that depends on one face.

A three-shot keeps three people readable as individuals. A group shot starts at four and reads as a mass.

A wide shot is about the space. A group shot is about the people filling it, even though both frames may be the same width.

Sidney Lumet keeps twelve men in one room for the length of 12 Angry Men (1957) and changes the lens as the film goes on, starting wide and high and finishing long and low, so the same group shot grows steadily more airless.

The back row turns into blur and cropped foreheads. Say every face stays readable and ask for staging in depth rather than a flat line.

The other failure is a crowd of strangers with no shape. Name the arrangement and what the group is doing, or the frame reads as stock footage.
