Gesture

The frame follows a movement rather than a face. Hands opening a letter, a foot pressing a pedal, shoulders dropping as somebody gives up.

Bodies say things faces cannot. A gesture shot lets an action carry the beat on its own, which is often more convincing than an expression describing the same thing.

Framed on the moving part with enough room for the movement to complete inside the shot. The face is usually out of frame or cropped, so nothing competes with the motion.

Direction and speed are the two things worth specifying. A hand that moves the wrong way, or too fast, cuts badly against the shots either side.

Use it when the action is the information: a hand that hesitates, a grip that tightens, a signature that stops halfway.

Skip it when the audience needs to know who is doing it. Without a face, the shot relies on the cut before it to say whose hands these are.

A cut-in is defined by coming from the action you are already watching. A gesture shot is defined by what it frames, which is a movement instead of a face.

An insert is usually about an object. A gesture shot is about what a body does to the object.

The model pulls back to include the face, because faces are what it expects to be the subject. Say the face is out of frame.

The second failure is a still hand. Name the movement, its direction and its speed, or the shot arrives as a portrait of a hand.
