Stylised PBR

  • stylised realism
  • stylized 3d
  • modern cg character

Physically correct materials on exaggerated shapes, which is the modern feature film look.

What it is for

Keeping the physics honest is what makes an exaggerated character feel present rather than cartoonish. The eye accepts a head twice the right size as long as the skin scatters light correctly, which is the whole trick of modern animated features.

How it works

Proportions are pushed well past realistic and the forms are simplified into clean rounded masses. Materials stay physically correct: real roughness, real reflectance, real subsurface in the skin. Lighting is a warm key, a cool fill and a rim, shot on a long lens with a shallow depth of field.

When to use it

Use it when a character has to be believable and appealing at the same time. Avoid it where the picture must read at icon size, because the detail that sells it disappears.

Told apart from its neighbours

Soft 3D Character is this style tuned to one specific house look. Hand-Painted Texture puts the shading in the texture and drops the physics. Subsurface Character is one material choice inside this style.

Where it is used

It carries a hero image, an advertisement, a game cinematic and any character meant to be liked and believed at once.

The prompt

Replace the blanks with your own character, keep the rest. Then run it on an image model.

<character>, stylised physically based render, exaggerated character proportions with a large head and simplified rounded forms, but every material physically correct with real roughness and real reflection, soft skin with visible subsurface at the ear and the nose, clean fabric with a believable weave, one warm key light and a cool fill, a soft rim separating the figure from the background, shallow depth of field from a long lens

Run it

What goes wrong

Either a photoreal human or a flat cartoon comes back. Say the proportions are exaggerated and the materials are physically correct, in the same sentence.

Leave out

flat shading, an outline, photoreal proportions, texture-painted shadows, harsh direct light

Watch for

Exaggerate the shape, not the material. The whole style is correct physics on incorrect anatomy, and a model that stylises the materials too lands somewhere cheaper.

Questions

Physically based rendering: materials described by real properties such as roughness and reflectance, so they behave correctly under any light. Stylised PBR keeps that honesty and exaggerates the shapes instead.
