- painted texture
- hand painted 3d
- stylised texture

What it is for
Painting the light into the texture means an artist decides where the eye goes rather than a renderer. The result reads as illustration with volume, and it holds up under any lighting because the lighting is already in the picture.
How it works
The colour map carries the highlights and shadows, painted with visible strokes that follow the form. Geometry is kept simple and rounded because the detail is in the paint. The scene light is soft and ambient, adding almost nothing, so the painted values stay readable.
When to use it
Use it for warm, crafted, storybook work and for games that must run anywhere. Avoid it when the light has to change, because painted shadows cannot move.
Told apart from its neighbours
Toon Shaded calculates flat bands from a real light. Stylised PBR keeps physical materials and a real key light. Concept Painting has no model at all.
Where it is used
It suits a game asset, a book illustration, an app icon and anything that should feel painted rather than rendered.
- Stylised games and mobile titles
- Animated shorts and idents
The prompt
Replace the blanks with your own character, keep the rest. Then run it on an image model.
<character>, hand painted texture style, the highlights and shadows painted directly into the colour map with visible brush strokes rather than calculated by a light, a warm painted rim along each form and a cool painted shadow beneath it, the geometry simple and rounded with the detail living in the paint, a soft even ambient light doing almost nothing, saturated storybook colour, visible brush direction following the form
What goes wrong
A normally lit render with a slightly painterly texture comes back. Ask for the shadows to be painted into the colour map and for the scene light to do almost nothing.
Leave out
photographic texture maps, a strong directional light, calculated shadows, physically correct materials, flat untextured colour
Watch for
Say the light is painted rather than lit. A model that adds a strong key light on top of painted shading gives two sets of shadows and the picture looks doubled.
