What it is for

Correct physics on incorrect anatomy is the whole trick. A viewer accepts a head twice the right size as long as the skin scatters light the way skin does, which is why this look carries a fantasy character and a real emotion at the same time.

How it works

Proportions are pushed well past realistic: a large head, wide eyes, simplified hands, rounded masses. Every material stays physically correct, especially the skin, which needs visible subsurface at the ears and the nose. Lighting is a warm key, a cool bounce and a soft rim, shot on a long lens so the background falls away.

When to use it

Use it for warmth, family work and anything that has to be liked by a wide audience. Avoid it where a distinctive identity matters, because this is the most recognisable house look in animation and your picture will be read as theirs.

Told apart from its neighbours

Stylised PBR is the same technique without the specific lighting and palette that fix the association. Subsurface Character is one material inside it. Hyperreal CG Creature keeps the physics and drops the exaggeration.

Where it is used

It carries an advertisement, a title card, a game cinematic and any character meant to feel both fantastical and present.

  • Computer animated features from Pixar, DreamWorks and Illumination
  • Television commercials and game cinematics

The prompt

Replace the blanks with your own character, keep the rest. Then run it on an image model.

<character>, soft 3D character render, a large rounded head on a small simplified body with big clear eyes set wide, skin rendered with real subsurface scattering so the ears and the nose glow warm against the light, soft rounded forms everywhere with no hard edge, one warm key light and a cool bounce fill with a gentle rim, clean believable fabric on the clothing, shallow depth of field from a long lens, a shallow cheerful colour palette

Run it

What goes wrong

Either a photoreal human or a flat cartoon comes back. Say exaggerated proportions and physically correct materials in the same sentence, and name the subsurface in the skin.

Leave out

photoreal proportions, an outline, flat shading, harsh contrast, texture-painted shadows, a wide lens

Watch for

This reads as a modern American computer animated feature, and it will read that way to everybody. To keep the quality and break the resemblance, take the key light cooler and drop the rim, or move the proportions towards realistic while keeping the soft materials.

Questions

It averages decades of output across very different films, so the same prompt returns a different picture every run. Naming the proportions, the subsurface and the lighting gives the same result each time.
