Stylistic Suck

The shot is made badly on purpose, and the badness is the joke or the point. Wrong exposure, an angle nobody would pick, and lighting that flatters nothing.

It works because an audience recognises incompetence instantly. Using that recognition deliberately says something about the character or the world that a well-made shot could not.

Break the rules that are usually invisible. Light from below or straight on with a bare source. Put the subject dead centre with a huge empty area above the head, or crop the top of the skull.

Get the exposure wrong in a specific direction. Blown windows with a dark face, or an overlit foreground against a black background.

Cheap production signals help. A visible microphone, a wrinkled backdrop, a zoom that overshoots and corrects.

Use it for comedy, for a public access or corporate video parody, and for a film within a film that is meant to be terrible.

Skip it anywhere the audience might read the badness as your badness. It needs a frame around it that says the choice was deliberate.

Found footage is bad because the equipment was consumer grade and the operator was running. Stylistic suck is bad because somebody with a choice chose wrong.

The test is intent inside the story. Found footage flaws come from circumstance. These flaws come from a fictional filmmaker with no taste.

The model hedges and returns a slightly imperfect but still competent frame. Commit to it: name the wrong exposure, the awkward crop and the unflattering angle together.

The second failure is a frame that reads as a mistake rather than a style. Add a production signal, such as a visible microphone or a cheap backdrop, so the audience sees a bad production rather than a bad render.
