Cosmic Horror
- Lovecraftian horror
- cosmic dread
Scale and darkness suggest something too large to see whole.

What it is for
The frame implies something larger than the frame. A shape at the edge of visibility, a scale the camera cannot contain, and no moment where the audience gets to see the whole of it.
Withholding is the entire mechanism. Anything fully shown can be measured, and anything measurable stops being frightening in this particular way.
How it works
Put the subject small against something vast and keep the vast thing partly obscured. Fog, distance, darkness or the top of the frame all work as the cut-off.
The light is wrong rather than dark. A sickly green, an unplaceable glow, a colour that does not belong to any light source in the scene. Wrongness reads faster than dimness.
Geometry that does not resolve helps. An angle that seems to bend, a horizon that sits where it should not. Keep it subtle enough that the audience doubts what they saw.
When to use it
Use it for dread that has no solution, for a reveal you intend to withhold, and for scale that is meant to make the characters irrelevant.
Skip it when the story needs a monster the audience can fight. A visible opponent is a different genre with different rules.
Told apart from its neighbours
Southern gothic keeps its dread human and local, inside a house and a family. Cosmic horror puts it outside the world and beyond negotiation.
Dystopian shows a system that has failed and can in principle be understood. Cosmic horror shows something that cannot be understood at all.
On film
Alex Garland keeps the source of Annihilation (2018) partly unseen throughout, using a shimmering boundary and colours that belong to nothing in the landscape, and the film never resolves what the audience has been looking at.

The prompt
Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.
cosmic horror framing of <subject>, vast dark scale, something enormous barely visible, sickly light, wrongness at the edges
What goes wrong
The model shows the creature. A full reveal kills the effect, so ask for something enormous barely visible, cut by the frame edge or lost in fog.
The other failure is ordinary darkness. Dark is not the same as wrong. Name a sickly colour and say the light has no source in the scene.
Leave out
clear reveal, bright light
Watch for
Never show the whole thing. The unseen part carries the dread.
