Southern Gothic

The heat is the first thing the audience reads. Damp air, sweat, slow movement, and a light that sits on everything rather than picking things out.

Underneath it is the decay. Paint comes off the boards, the vegetation is taking the building back, and the family has something it does not discuss. The setting carries the plot before anybody speaks.

Warm heavy light, often late afternoon or filtered through leaves. Haze in the air so distances soften and the frame feels humid rather than crisp.

The set dressing does most of the work. Peeling paint, rust, kudzu or ivy on a porch, a screen door, standing water. Each one says time has passed and nobody stopped it.

Slow camera and slow performance. The style falls apart at pace, because hurry reads as a different climate.

Use it for family secrets, for rural crime, and for a story where the past is still in the building.

Skip it in a city and skip it in cold light. The genre is tied to a place and a temperature, and moving either one takes you somewhere else.

Cosmic horror is about scale and something too large to see. Southern gothic is about a small place and a human secret, and the threat is somebody in the family.

The test is where the dread comes from. If it comes from outside the world, the name is cosmic horror. If it comes from the house, it is southern gothic.

Charles Laughton shot The Night of the Hunter (1955) on the river country of the American south, with a preacher in pursuit and an expressionist streak in the lighting, and it stays the reference for the genre on film.

The model cools the light, which moves the scene to a different genre. Say the light is heavy and warm, and ask for humid air by name.

The second failure is a clean rural picture. Ask for peeling paint, overgrowth and rust. Without the decay the frame reads as a pleasant countryside.
