What it is for
Giallo lights a scene in saturated primaries that no room could produce, and it does not explain them. The colour is doing emotional work with no obligation to the physics of the set.
The threat stays partial. A gloved hand, a blade, a figure at the edge of the frame. Withholding the attacker is what the style is built around, and the colour makes the withholding feel deliberate rather than cheap.
How it works
Coloured light arrives from off screen with no visible source. Deep red on one side, blue or green on the other, at full saturation. Nothing motivates them and nothing needs to.
The interiors are ornate. Patterned wallpaper, glass, tile and mirrors give the colour somewhere to land and something to bounce off.
The black gloved hand is the recurring figure. It enters the frame from the edge, often in the foreground and out of focus, which keeps the person attached to it outside the picture.
When to use it
Use it for stylised horror, for a killing shot as set piece, and for any sequence where beauty and violence are meant to sit in the same frame.
Skip it when the scene has to feel real. The light gives the game away immediately, which is fine for horror and wrong for drama.
Told apart from its neighbours
Film noir uses one hard source and keeps colour out of it. Giallo uses several coloured sources at once and lets the shadows fill with colour rather than black.
Maximalism fills the frame with pattern and object. Giallo fills it with light. A giallo frame can be nearly empty and still read, as long as the colour is wrong.
On film
Dario Argento lit Suspiria (1977) in unmotivated red, blue and green, using an old three-strip printing process to push the saturation past anything a set could produce. Mario Bava did the earlier version in Blood and Black Lace (1964), which set the pattern of a masked figure, a gloved hand and coloured light with no lamp behind it.

The prompt
Replace the blanks, keep the rest. Then run it on a video model.
giallo look on <subject>, saturated red and blue light from off screen, ornate interior, gloved hand at the edge of frame, high style
What goes wrong
The model motivates the colour and softens it, giving you a room with a coloured lamp in it. Say the light has no visible source and push the saturation past plausible.
The second failure is a full reveal of the attacker. Ask for a gloved hand at the edge of frame and keep the figure out, or the shot becomes an ordinary horror beat.
Leave out
naturalistic light, muted colour
Watch for
The colour has no source and does not need one. Push it past plausible.
