Photography

The frame is composed as a still and then held. Nothing moves, and the audience is given time to read the picture as a picture rather than as a moment passing.

Stillness in a moving medium is conspicuous. An audience that expects movement and gets none starts examining the frame, which is exactly what the technique is for.

Lock the camera. No drift, no breathing handheld, no slow push. Any movement turns the still back into a shot.

Compose it as a photograph. A clear subject, a considered edge, and a moment chosen because it is the one worth stopping on.

Light it the way a photographer would. One considered source, contrast that would hold up in a print, and a frame that survives being looked at for as long as you intend to hold it.

Use it for a portrait sequence, for a title card, for memory, and for a beat that should sit outside the flow of the scene around it.

Skip it when the story needs momentum. The technique stops time on purpose, and stopping it too often makes a piece feel like a slideshow.

Arthouse also holds the frame, and it holds it long enough for something to change inside the shot. A photographic frame has nothing changing in it at all.

A video portrait is a held frame with a live subject who blinks and breathes. Photography has no movement whatsoever.

Chris Marker built La Jetee (1962) almost entirely from still photographs, cut together with narration, and the film is the standard demonstration that a sequence of stills can carry a story. The one moment of live movement in it lands because everything around it is frozen.

The model adds a slow drift or a subtle push, because movement is what it associates with video. Say the camera is locked and ban camera movement and motion blur by name.

The second failure is a live subject shifting in frame. If you want a true photograph, say the image is completely still, including the subject.
