What it is for
Undyed fabric has a narrow colour range and no strong hue, so the whole palette says restraint before anything else is drawn. It is the colour of a decision not to decorate.
It also flatters skin. Every tone in the set sits close to a skin tone, which is why clothing brands keep returning to it.
How it works
Build six steps and keep them close together. A wide jump breaks the sense of one material.
Keep every tone warm. The moment one goes grey it reads as a wash rather than as raw fibre.
Let the texture carry the picture. With this little hue difference, the weave and the light are the only things left to look at.

What goes wrong
A picture of fabric comes back instead of the subject. The palette is the colour set. Name your subject first and let the fibre tones describe it.
A true white or a true black appears and the set stops reading as undyed. Say both ends stay warm.
The tones drift grey. Say all six are warm neutrals with very low saturation.
