What it is for
Wood and brass age at the same rate and in the same direction, so the two together read as one object that has been used. No other pairing does that as quickly.
The set is also a single climb from dark to light with no hue change, which makes it very easy to light and very hard to get wrong.
How it works
Put the wood at the bottom of the value range and the metal at the top. The order is what makes the brass look lit.
Keep every colour warm, including the highlight. One cool highlight and the brass reads as steel.
Add a single cream note for the lightest value. It stands in for paper, bone or a label, and it stops the top end going yellow.
When to use it
Use it for craft, tradition, tools and hospitality: instruments, spirits, a barber or workshop identity, an interior, a product shot.
Leave it alone for anything modern or clinical. The palette is nostalgic by construction.
Told apart from its neighbours
Art Deco Gold and Black uses gold against a flat black for glamour. This one uses brass against wood for use and age, and it has no black in it.
Verdigris is what happens to the same brass after thirty years outside. Pick this one for a kept object and that one for an abandoned one.

Brass instruments in walnut cases gave the set its shape, and whisky, barbering and workshop brands borrowed it because it makes a new product look inherited.

What goes wrong
A photograph of a trumpet on a table arrives instead of the subject. The palette is the colour set. Keep your own subject named at the front.
The metal comes back as chrome or silver. Say polished brass and pale gold, and rule out chrome, silver and cool grey.
The highlights turn blue. Say the palette is entirely warm, including in the highlights.

Watch for
Keep the brass satin rather than mirrored. A mirror finish turns the wood into a stage set.
