What it is for
The whole set sits on one side of the wheel, so it agrees with itself before anything is drawn. That is why an autumn picture is restful even when it is loud.
It also carries a date. Very few palettes say what month it is, and this one says October without anybody drawing a leaf.
How it works
Anchor the dark end with a real bark brown. Without it the golds have nothing to sit against and the picture floats.
Run russet, amber and gold as the middle. Those three are the turn itself, and they should hold most of the area.
Keep one dull olive. It is the green that has not gone over yet, and it is what separates autumn from a brown study.
When to use it
Use it for warmth, harvest, age and comfort: food, spirits, knitwear, a seasonal campaign, a book cover.
Leave it alone in spring and for anything technical. The palette is soft and dated, and it makes a precise subject look nostalgic.
Told apart from its neighbours
Seventies Earth uses the same browns but adds avocado and mustard, and it comes from paint charts rather than from trees. It reads as a decade, not as a season.
An analogous scheme is the rule this palette obeys. If you want the rule with no season attached, use that instead.
Where it was used
New England tourism has sold one week of colour for fifty years on this set alone. Whisky and knitwear borrowed it because it makes a warm product look like it belongs to a cold day.

What goes wrong
A photograph of a forest arrives in place of the subject. The palette is the colour set. Keep your subject named at the front and let the colours describe it.
The green is dropped and the picture turns brown and flat. Say one dull olive green stays in the set.
The shadows come back cold and blue. Say the palette is warm throughout, including in shadow.
