What it is for
Showing every edge at once, including the ones behind, gives a kind of x-ray understanding no solid view can. It also looks like a machine thinking, which is why it escaped from modelling software into anything that wants to feel computational.
How it works
Only edges are drawn, in a regular quadrilateral mesh that follows the curvature of each form. Nothing is filled. Back edges are kept rather than removed, so the structure shows through itself. Lines are thin, bright and of one weight on a dark ground, glowing slightly where many of them cross.
When to use it
Use it for anything about structure, computation or analysis. Avoid it where a form has to be read quickly, because a shape showing through itself is hard to resolve at a glance.
Told apart from its neighbours
Cutaway removes part of a surface and keeps the rest solid. Low Poly in the print catalogue fills its facets. Blueprint draws visible edges on paper and removes the hidden ones.

It carries a title sequence, an interface, a technical marketing page and any picture that should feel machine made.

What goes wrong
A solid model with a mesh drawn on the front comes back. Ask for no surfaces at all and for the back edges to be drawn, so the form shows through itself.

filled surfaces, hidden line removal, shading, texture, a light source, a solid silhouette
Watch for
Say the back edges are drawn. Hidden line removal is the default for a technical view, and keeping them is what makes a wireframe read as a structure rather than as an outline.
