How much should be cut away?

Enough to show the interior and no more. Keeping most of the shell intact is what lets the reader understand where the inside sits relative to the outside.

What is a ghosted view?

A cousin of the cutaway where the outer surface is made faintly transparent rather than removed. It keeps the whole silhouette at the cost of some clarity inside.

Should the interior be shaded?

Lightly at most. Flat colour with clean line keeps every internal part readable, and heavy shading turns an explanation back into a picture.

What it is for

Taking a thing apart loses the relationships between its parts. Cutting into it keeps every part where it really sits and shows the inside at the same time, which is why a cutaway explains a machine better than a set of components ever does.

How it works

A section of the outer surface is removed along a clean edge. That edge is hatched with close parallel lines to show material thickness. Everything inside is drawn in its true position. What remains of the shell is drawn lighter or slightly transparent so it does not compete.

When to use it

Use it for anything with a hidden inside worth seeing. Avoid it for a simple object, where cutting into it reveals nothing.

Told apart from its neighbours

Exploded Diagram separates the parts and loses their positions. Patent Drawing shades the whole picture with hatching rather than only the cut edge. Wireframe shows everything at once and hides nothing.
