What it is for
A puppet is a small sculpture that has to survive being handled thousands of times, so everything about it is built rather than drawn. The result is a character that exists at a real scale under a real light, which is why it holds a viewer differently from a drawing.
How it works
A jointed metal armature carries the pose. The head is sculpted and painted by hand. The costume is sewn from real fabric at a small scale, so the weave is coarse relative to the figure. Everything is lit with practical lights on a built set and photographed with a close lens.
When to use it
Use it when a character should feel crafted and slightly uncanny. Avoid it when the design needs to be simple and graphic, because a real material always carries more detail than a drawing.
Told apart from its neighbours
Claymation is modelled and carries fingerprints. Felt and Fabric is soft all the way through, with no armature under it. Plastic Toy is moulded, glossy and identical every time.
Where it is used
It suits a hero image, an advertisement, a book cover and anything that wants craft to be the message.

What goes wrong
A smooth doll with a painted outfit comes back. Ask for woven fabric, visible seams, real fibre hair and dust on the costume.

smooth plastic, a painted on costume, digital cleanliness, flat lighting, a simplified face, deep focus
Watch for
Ask for real woven fabric with seams. A model paints clothing onto a figure by default, and a painted costume is the single fastest way to lose the look.
