What it is for
Wool absorbs light rather than reflecting it, so a felted figure has almost no highlight and very soft shadow. That makes it read as warm and touchable, which is why the material is used for anything that wants to be liked.
How it works
Loose wool is stabbed repeatedly with a barbed needle until the fibres tangle and hold a shape. The surface stays fuzzy, with stray fibres at every edge. Small dimples from the needle cover it. Nothing can be made sharp, so every form is slightly rounded and slightly uneven.
When to use it
Use it for warmth, childhood and craft. Avoid it for anything that needs precision or menace, because the material cannot do either.
Told apart from its neighbours
Felt and Fabric is a rendered imitation of this. Plush is sewn from cut cloth with seams. Claymation is dense, matte and takes a fingerprint rather than a fibre.

It suits a product shot, a greetings card, a children's book and any advertisement that wants to feel handmade.

What goes wrong
A smooth toy with a fabric texture comes back. Ask for stray fibres at the silhouette, needle dimples across the surface, and forms with no hard edge.

Watch for
Ask for loose fibres standing up at the edges, backlit if possible. Fuzz at the silhouette is what a soft material does and what a rendered one never does by default.
