Barely. The light below sets the colour, usually warm amber or white, and the sand only controls how much of it arrives. Adding painted colour makes it a different medium.

What makes the marks look real?

Fingers and the side of a hand. Wide soft drags, a fingertip line, and grains scattered at the edge of every shape are what the material actually does.

How is this different from charcoal?

Charcoal sits on opaque paper and is lit from the front. Sand sits on glass and is lit from behind, so its tone comes from how much light gets through rather than from how dark the mark is.

What it is for

The material cannot hold a hard edge, so every shape is soft and every transition is a gradient of grain. The picture is always visibly in the middle of being made, which is why it works so well for memory and dream.

How it works

Dark sand is spread on a backlit glass sheet. Where the layer is thick no light passes and the area is black; where it is thin the light comes through amber. Shapes are made by pushing the sand with fingers, with the side of a hand, or with a brush. The camera looks straight down.

When to use it

Use it for memory, transformation and anything meant to feel temporary. Avoid it where a design has to be precise, because the material will not hold a straight line.

Paint on Glass is worked wet and holds colour and brush marks. Shadow Silhouette blocks the light with a solid cut shape instead of a loose one. Charcoal is drawn on paper and can be erased cleanly.

What goes wrong

An illustration of a sand texture comes back, with a drawn outline. Ask for the picture to be made only of sand thickness against backlight, with no line anywhere.

Watch for

There is no line. The whole picture is made of thickness, so every edge is a change in density, and asking for an outline anywhere destroys it.
