What it is for
It was a deliberate refusal of the round, soft, fully painted look that came before it. Flattening the drawing made animation cheaper, and it turned out to look more like design than like a moving painting, which is why it still reads as sophisticated.
How it works
Bodies are built from triangles and long rectangles rather than circles. The line is scratchy and uneven. Colour is printed in loose blocks that do not line up with the drawing. Paper texture shows through everything, and the palette is small and slightly dirty.
When to use it
Use it for anything that should look designed rather than drawn, and for period work that needs to feel confident rather than nostalgic. Avoid it when a character needs to be cuddly, because angular shapes are not warm.
Told apart from its neighbours
Ligne Claire holds one line weight and registers the colour exactly. Cel Animation keeps the roundness and the volume. Contemporary Flat Illustration in the design catalogue is its descendant, with clean registration and a modern palette.

Watch for
The offset is the signature. Ask for the colour blocks to sit slightly off the line, because a model registers them perfectly by default and the picture immediately reads as a modern flat illustration instead.
