What it is for
Indigo and magenta are close enough on the wheel to agree and far enough apart to separate, so a face lit magenta stands clear of an indigo background with no extra light at all.
It is also the only night palette here that flatters skin. Magenta sits near the colour of blood under the surface, so a face under it reads as alive rather than as lit.
How it works
Set the ground to indigo, not black. A deep blue that still has colour in it is what the magenta is measured against.
Put the magenta on the subject and nowhere else. It is a single source, usually a sign or a lamp just out of frame.
Keep amber out. One warm source turns this into an ordinary night exterior and the palette stops being a choice.
When to use it
Use it for a portrait at night, a car interior, a club, a beach after dark, a quiet scene that still has to be beautiful.
Leave it alone for anything that needs to look ordinary. Nobody has ever been lit like this by accident.
Told apart from its neighbours
Amber and Cyan is a street palette with two opposing temperatures. This one keeps everything cool and uses hue rather than temperature to separate the subject.
A primary gel wash gives each surface its own hue. Here one night colour holds the whole frame and a single magenta source cuts through it.
Where it was used
A 2016 feature built three acts on it and made the palette shorthand for a private moment in a public place. Music video had been using the same pair for a decade, for the same reason: it makes a face the only warm thing in a cold frame.

What goes wrong
The shadows come back black and the frame dies. Say the shadows fall to deep indigo rather than to black.

Indigo is not black. If the shadows go all the way to black the magenta has nothing to sit against.
