What it is for
A material that light goes through and that cannot quite hold itself up reads as alive and edible at once. The slump is what sells it: anything that soft has to be losing its shape a little.
How it works
Light travels through the body, so thick areas deepen in colour and thin ones go almost clear. The form slumps slightly under its own weight. The surface is wet and glossy with a small sharp highlight. The shadow underneath is tinted by the colour the light passed through.
When to use it
Use it for confectionery, cosmetics and anything that should look squeezable. Avoid it on hard objects, where translucency reads as a rendering error.
Told apart from its neighbours
Subsurface Character scatters light near the surface rather than passing it all the way through, and it keeps its shape. Inflatable is a skin around air. Plastic Toy is opaque and rigid.
