What it is for
Removing local colour removes every clue about what a thing is made of, so the form itself has to carry the picture. What is left reads as lit from inside rather than lit from outside, which is why it feels otherworldly rather than merely colourful.
How it works
The subject has no colour of its own. One continuous spectrum washes across the whole form and runs straight over every boundary in it. Hue does the work that value normally does. Edges glow softly. The background is dark so the glow has somewhere to fall off into.
When to use it
Use it for music, beauty, fashion and anything that should feel synthetic and lit from within. Avoid it where material matters, because the style removes all of it.
Told apart from its neighbours
Mesh Gradient has no subject at all. Subsurface Character keeps real materials and glows because light passes through them. Primary Gel Wash in the colour catalogue is coloured light falling on a subject that still has its own colour.

Watch for
No local colour anywhere. The whole effect depends on hair, skin and cloth being indistinguishable, and a model gives the hair its own colour unless it is told not to.
